mamby-pamby-pony-princess:

So I had a neat revelation about Rarity in the shower today and I really want to share with the class.

If you look at the Mane Six, they’re kind of a ragtag bunch.  Most of them are outsiders and social misfits.  You know who isn’t? Rarity.

Just look at “Sweet and Elite”, Rarity goes to Canterlot and not only becomes a part of Canterlot elite, she practically leads them! She becomes the pony everypony should know. And it’s not like she does this by pretending to be royalty or anything, she does this by being Rarity, by being herself.  If anything, she sells herself short! None of the ponies seem aware that Rarity and her friends have saved Equestria on multiple occasions or that she is one of the wielders of the Elements of Harmony.

Rarity is definitely different than her friends, she can roll with different crowds. The important thing, and I think one of the things MLP:FIM does so right, is that even though Rarity could have really important friends, she still loves the rest of the Mane Six and considers them to be her closest and dearest friends.

I think Rarity is one of the characters that really sets this show apart from other shows aimed at girls. In so many other shows Rarity would have scoffed at Twilight Sparkle when she met her. Rarity would be snooty and look down on the Mane Six.  My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic throws that tired stereotype out the window. The show gives Rarity a depth rarely seen in other characters like her.

Then there’s the fact that Rarity is a clothing designer. I cannot get over how happy that makes me. So many other shows would have made her shopping obsessed, but instead they have made Rarity an artist. Clothing is her passion, and creating it is her way of expressing herself.

Rarity is my favorite MLP character and always gets my vote for best pony. I think the show has done really great things with her character, and I hope to see more like her. A lot of young girl’s programming reinforces the idea that pretty, sophisticated girls are cruel and vapid, and I love seeing that stereotype knocked down.
