Mermaids!

bare boobies, open and free! In some weird way this really makes me want to go swimming?? And only emboldens my constant hunger for a mermaid tail. You know how athletes get sponsored by gear companies? I think I should be sponsored by a mermaid tale company. Because I live the mer life. And I would wear it every day.

pt. 1 of a series entitled “I thought you said you liked long hair…”
women in our society grow up believing that body hair is unnatural, and that the removal of hair is a ritualistic practice to be done as often as possible. we see ads for shaving creams featuring long, lean, hairless legs being caressed by a man. we see hairy women being automatically labeled as man hating feminists or as being unkempt, dirty, and lazy. we want women to look like girls; hairless, fresh, clean, and new. we’re scared of aging, of growth, of change, and so we shave, and we wax, and we pluck. body hair makes society cringe, and so we put in the work.
In “I thought you said you liked long hair…” I attempt to address the problematic ways in which society views hair. Long hair is the ideal, but only if it’s in the right place. So to the countless men who have told me that they prefer women with long hair, you’re getting what you’ve asked for.

I dig this for a couple of reasons.
First, it’s got great style.
Perhaps more interestingly though, is that it’s a very different tone as far as the direction of aggression. Most people know the Clash of the Titans version where she’s  on the hunt for him once he shows up. But let’s face it, Medusa really gets the shaft from destiny overall. She starts out as a priestess in a temple who gets raped by Poseidon and gets cursed for it as if it was all her fault. The result is that she’s basically doomed to live without human contact for eternity. Then she’s hunted down specifically for her head by a demigod whose got all sorts of great toys and backing to get the job done and depicted as some sort of horrible monster for defending her turf from folks out to kill her.
There are some really interesting theories about regarding just what the whole ‘gorgon’ thing was really about from a historical perspective. It’s really quite a tragic tale about the rise of patriarchy and the purge of goddess-centric worshipers. There are also parallels to the Apollo versus Typhon story which is part of the same era. Harsh.
See, even the demystified stories from ancient times are fascinating!

Reblogging for commentary.

I wish there were more nuanced portrayals of Medusa than as just a scary, snake lady.

My husband and I had a very extensive conversation about just this over this summer.  Medusa is so interesting and totally drew the short straw in life.

I just ADORED Wreck-It Ralph. The female characters were unique and vivacious, the story and writing were tight as can be, and the visuals mashed up lots of different styles excellently. I can’t wait to see it agaaaiinnnn. I feel spoiled rotten with ParaNorman and Wreck-It Ralph coming out this year and being super perfect family films. aaahhh

Hoping to take my niece to see it on Tuesday, and you’re making me so excited! <3
