Kyle and I this afternoon! Got some free comics, can’t wait to dive into them. I also picked up a copy of Young Avengers #1 with the Bryan Lee O’Malley variant cover, hoping I can get it signed by him next week at TCAF! (Thanks Chris for the photo!)
I’m sure most of you know by now, but today is Free Comic Book Day! Which means your Local Comic Book Store will have a bundle of free comics to give away. Why not take the opportunity to stop in and look around, as well as get a free comic or two?
I get asked for comic recommendations every day, especially recommendations for someone who wants to get into comics but finds them intimidating. I totally relate to this sentiment! The comic book world and Comic Book Stores can be scary if you’re new. You can feel silly for not being an expert but you know what? There is no bad place to start when it comes to comics!
I do have a video where I talk about some of my favourite comics but it’s in an ASMR-style and that’s not everyone’s thing. And that’s cool! So I thought today I would recommend a few titles for you to check out, ones that are somewhat recent so if you wanted to get all caught up it would be easy peasy lemon squeezey why did I write that oh god oh god. Do you have to start at #1? No, I don’t think it’s an absolute. It might be preferred but hey, why not grab a few different titles and then catch up on the ones you really liked. No sense investing in something that doesn’t rub you the right way.

Okay so right off the bat (sorry I can’t help myself I’m the worst I know) I have to start with Batwoman. I’m sure everyone knows I’m a Kate Kane stan but I really can’t help myself. I love this series, I love the art, how it’s written, character depictions, I love it all. If this title was a person I would kiss it right on the mouth and then shake it’s hand. Good job, you did the thing.

Next up is Wonder Woman. This run is my first time getting into Wondy. Before this, I was always like, Wonder Woman? She’s a bit Betty Cooper for my taste. But you know what I actually figured out while I was reading this? That assumption was based on pretty much nothing. Except maybe her star-spangled costume. Diana is hard core in this. Like actually. She’ll smack you in the face if you disrespect her. This title is dark and gorey and phenomenally drawn. Seriously, look at this cover. I could cry about it. But I won’t. Well not in front of you. Ever since getting into this title I’ve been scouring shelves for more Wonder Woman goodness. Also there is a Batwoman/Wonder Woman crossover so yeah you’re gonna want to get on that.

FF: Marvel NOW! aka the Fantastic Four but way better (shhhhh just go with it) I don’t read a ton of Marvel. Because $3.99? A girls gotta EAT! But come on, She-Hulk? Medusa? MS. THING? Need I say more? Okay I will. This series is relatively new but I’ve been enjoying is so far. Matt Fraction does a gosh dang good job on it, high fives all around. I also hear good things about Hawkeye but I haven’t read that one personally so read at your own discretion. Hey, I’m not the boss of you. Also Michael Allred should just draw everything ever. It is known.

The Fearless Defenders is an all-lady team led by Miss Misty Knight and Valkyrie. I’ve only read a few of these as well because they’re somewhat new, but they’re super fun! And these ladies get into shenanigans of the highest order. I enjoy shenanigans. get it girls.
So if any of these interest you, write them down, and bring your list with you. The associates will help you find what you’re looking for and you’ll at least have a boat to start diving into the world of comics. There’s lots of other great titles besides these, but these might get you started!
I hope this was helpful! A happy May the Fourth to all of you, & enjoy your Saturday. ♡

I have a little side blog now, called Super Ladies: Missing. It’s dedicated to showcasing the Super Hero/Comic merch that fails to include their female characters. Submissions are open, so if you’re out and about and come across something take a picture and send it to us! Online merch is dandy too.
every time we sit down to eat he yells “BATMAN CUP CALLED IT”
and you know what
I want the Batman cup, I want it
it’s not fair
Megan Gwynn “Pixie”
Let’s be honest- Pixie is just a cosplay waiting to happen. Can’t wait to see her new costume in X-Men!
10 years ago this month I started drawing Lost At Sea, my first graphic novel.
This is like the most tumblr picture ever though
The CBS show The Big Bang Theory drew some criticism this week when the promo for this week’s episode featured the women of the show entering a comic shop with the voice over saying “the girls go where no woman has gone before”.
The promo is suggesting that women don’t go into comic shops, or read comics reinforcing yet another set of stereotypes about geek culture.
The idea that women don’t go into comics shops or read comics is a fallacy, of course. You only need to flip through the three years of the Women Read Comics in Public if you need convincing (which if you do WHY ARE HERE?)
So when a show like TBBT helps to spread a frustrating stereotype that I spend like a lot of time fighting it really pisses me off.
But I decided to watch the episode because just as in comics sometimes the teasers don’t exactly adhere to what they are teasing. So how was the actual show in depicting the reception of the women? I took a look at some stereotypes about women and comics and comic shops and rated the episode.

Just one of many reasons I’m pretty much done with this show. Boozanga.
